The long drops add another level of handwork, with eight tiny filigree butterflies in total, each individually made by Elizabeth. Only then are the different elements brought together with the gemstone strands. It makes this one of the most labour-intensive designs in the collection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the centre of each flower, Elizabeth has hand-set a 4.5 mm faceted rubellite from Madagascar, sourced through Mara Gems. The stones come from small-scale mining and can be traced back to their mine of origin. Rubellite is the rich pink-to-red variety of tourmaline. Long strands of faceted rubellite, chrysoprase and citrine fall from the flowers, with the filigree butterflies moving freely among the stones as the earrings are worn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe gemstone drops are detachable, giving the earrings two very different expressions. Worn at full length, colour, filigree and movement come together in a striking pair of earrings. Remove the drops and the sculptural Astraea flowers remain as refined studs. Elizabeth makes four flowers for every pair, building each one separately from two layers of filigree. The upper petals are worked in \u003ci\u003ealto relieve\u003c\/i\u003e, an old three-dimensional filigree technique that lifts the fine wirework away from the flower beneath. Making four of these intricate forms requires an extraordinary amount of work, particularly as every curve and every small piece of wire is shaped and assembled by hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGarnet gives this version of Astraea its richness. Elizabeth chose faceted stones in two sizes, setting 4.5 mm garnets into the smaller flowers and 6 mm stones into the larger ones. Their deep wine-red colour is beautiful against the gold, especially in the larger flowers as they move beneath the ear. The scale makes these unmistakably statement earrings, but the filigree itself remains incredibly fine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe larger flowers are detachable, something Elizabeth incorporated into the design so the earrings could be worn beyond their most dramatic form. This one has travelled from Madagascar to her workbench, where it is set by hand into the centre of Astraea.
