Elizabeth’s great-grandmother came from this mountain region, and later generations of her family lived there for many years. On her most recent visit to Colombia, her family took her into the mountains to La Siberia. It was the first time she experienced for herself a place she had previously known through their stories.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the ring, the Dahlia takes centre stage. Elizabeth makes the flower entirely in filigree, a centuries-old goldsmithing technique she studied in greater depth in Colombia. Every petal is formed individually. Some are densely filled with fine wire, while others are built from tiny open filigree shapes. Seen together, the different patterns give the flower depth and a wonderful sense of lightness. Look more closely and the openwork has the delicacy of lace.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA faceted aquamarine is set by hand at the heart of the flower. Its clear blue brings a cool point of light to the warmth of the gold and draws the eye to the centre of the design. The Dahlia is generous in scale, giving the ring a strong presence on the hand. Elizabeth chose a deep blue-green specimen from Madagascar for this ring, sourced through Mara Gems from small-scale artisanal mining. Completely untreated, the stone can be traced back to the mine where it was found.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMuch of the work in the Astraea flower only reveals itself when you look closely. What first appears bold and almost sculptural is constructed from exceptionally fine filigree wire. Elizabeth builds the flower in two layers, shaping the eight upper petals by hand using \u003ci\u003ealto relieve\u003c\/i\u003e. This traditional three-dimensional technique lifts the wirework away from the surface, giving each petal its rounded form. Beneath them, a second, open layer of filigree allows glimpses of skin between the gold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sapphirine sits low at the centre, dark and intense against the warmth of the metal. Its blue-green colour has a depth that draws you in, but it is the change in scale that makes the ring so compelling. From across the hand, Astraea reads as a strong golden flower. Juist de kleur van deze steen trok me meteen aan: een diepe, warme oranjetint met een prachtige gloed. De herkomst is terug te voeren tot de mijn waar de spessartien werd gevonden. Sourced through Mara Gems, the stone comes from small scale mining and can be traced back to the area where it was mined. Rubellite is one of tourmaline’s most vivid varieties, with colours ranging from rich pink to deep red. For Elizabeth, knowing the journey of a gemstone makes setting it all the more special. This one has travelled from Madagascar to her workbench, where it is set by hand into the centre of Astraea.
