Astraea began at Elizabeth’s workbench with a Zeeuwse knoop, a traditional Dutch filigree form she had set out to make. Somewhere in the process, the design changed. The lines became petals and a flower appeared. Only later did Elizabeth discover Astrantia, a flower known in Dutch as Zeeuws knoopje. She loved the coincidence. A flower that had emerged intuitively from her filigree shared its name with the very tradition she had started with. Astraea, derived from Astrantia, became its name.

The Garnet Statement Earrings are the most elaborate expression of Astraea. Elizabeth makes four flowers for every pair, building each one separately from two layers of filigree. The upper petals are worked in alto relieve, an old three-dimensional filigree technique that lifts the fine wirework away from the flower beneath. Making four of these intricate forms requires an extraordinary amount of work, particularly as every curve and every small piece of wire is shaped and assembled by hand.

Garnet gives this version of Astraea its richness. Elizabeth chose faceted stones in two sizes, setting 4.5 mm garnets into the smaller flowers and 6 mm stones into the larger ones. Their deep wine-red colour is beautiful against the gold, especially in the larger flowers as they move beneath the ear. The scale makes these unmistakably statement earrings, but the filigree itself remains incredibly fine.

The larger flowers are detachable, something Elizabeth incorporated into the design so the earrings could be worn beyond their most dramatic form. Without them, the smaller Astraea flowers become elegant garnet studs. Add the larger flowers and the proportions change completely, creating the long version shown here. At Diosa del Alma, the person who imagines the jewel is also the person who makes it. Elizabeth designs and creates each piece herself, from the first idea to the moment it leaves her atelier.

This gives her the freedom to let a design evolve as she works. Proportions may shift or an unexpected detail may take the jewel in a new direction. Elizabeth enjoys leaving room for those moments rather than deciding everything in advance.

That same way of working makes personalisation a natural part of the atelier. Elizabeth can respond to individual wishes herself and shape a jewel with the person who will wear it in mind.

Becoming a goldsmith was never part of the life she had imagined for herself. Until then, her career had been in the world of fashion and luxury. She had also built her own business, before serious illness unexpectedly changed the course of her life.

Several years later, during her recovery, she began learning to make jewellery. It was initially intended to support her rehabilitation, but she quickly became absorbed by the craft itself. She went on to train further as a goldsmith, discovering a direction she could never have imagined before her illness.
