Astraea was never meant to be a flower. Elizabeth was working on a Zeeuwse knoop, the traditional filigree form from Zeeland, when the piece began to take a different shape in her hands. She followed it, and a flower emerged. Only later did she discover Astrantia, known in Dutch as Zeeuws knoopje. That unexpected connection became the inspiration for the name Astraea.

Each Astraea is built from two layers of filigree. Elizabeth works the upper layer in alto relieve, a three-dimensional technique that raises the fine wirework and gives the flower its sculptural form. Creating the two flowers alone requires considerable time and precision. The long drops add another level of handwork, with eight tiny filigree butterflies in total, each individually made by Elizabeth. Only then are the different elements brought together with the gemstone strands. It makes this one of the most labour-intensive designs in the collection.

At the centre of each flower, Elizabeth has hand-set a 4.5 mm faceted rubellite from Madagascar, sourced through Mara Gems. The stones come from small-scale mining and can be traced back to their mine of origin. Rubellite is the rich pink-to-red variety of tourmaline. Long strands of faceted rubellite, chrysoprase and citrine fall from the flowers, with the filigree butterflies moving freely among the stones as the earrings are worn.

The gemstone drops are detachable, giving the earrings two very different expressions. Worn at full length, colour, filigree and movement come together in a striking pair of earrings. Remove the drops and the sculptural Astraea flowers remain as refined studs. The Astraea Rubellite Stud Earrings are also available separately.

From First Idea to Final Detail

At Diosa del Alma, the person who imagines the jewel is also the person who makes it. Elizabeth designs and creates each piece herself, from the first idea to the moment it leaves her atelier.

This gives her the freedom to let a design evolve as she works. Proportions may shift or an unexpected detail may take the jewel in a new direction. Elizabeth enjoys leaving room for those moments rather than deciding everything in advance.

That same way of working makes personalisation a natural part of the atelier. Elizabeth can respond to individual wishes herself and shape a jewel with the person who will wear it in mind.

Elizabeth

Becoming a goldsmith was never part of the life she had imagined for herself. Until then, her career had been in the world of fashion and luxury. She had also built her own business, before serious illness unexpectedly changed the course of her life.

Several years later, during her recovery, she began learning to make jewellery. It was initially intended to support her rehabilitation, but she quickly became absorbed by the craft itself. She went on to train further as a goldsmith, discovering a direction she could never have imagined before her illness.
