Astraea began with a beautiful accident at the workbench. Elizabeth was making a traditional Zeeuwse knoop, a historic Dutch filigree jewel, when the piece in her hands began to resemble a flower. Much later, she came across Astrantia and discovered its Dutch name: Zeeuws knopje. That unexpected connection became part of Astraea’s story and eventually gave the flower her name.

The flower is built in two layers of filigree, with the upper layer shaped in alto relieve. Raising the filigree in this way gives Astraea her sculptural depth. It is particularly beautiful in a ring, where every movement of the hand offers another view: glimpses between the layers, changing shadows and tiny flashes of gold as the light moves across the open wirework.

A 4.5 mm faceted rubellite from Madagascar glows at the centre. Sourced through Mara Gems, the stone comes from small scale mining and can be traced back to the area where it was mined. Rubellite is one of tourmaline’s most vivid varieties, with colours ranging from rich pink to deep red. For Elizabeth, knowing the journey of a gemstone makes setting it all the more special. This one has travelled from Madagascar to her workbench, where it is set by hand into the centre of Astraea. Its story and provenance can be discovered in Materials & Gemstones.

This ring was created to accompany the Astraea Rubellite Cascada earrings, which feature the same filigree flower and rubellite centre. In the Cascada, strands of coloured gemstones fall beneath the flowers, interspersed with tiny handmade filigree butterflies that move as they are worn. The ring brings the eye back to Astraea herself: the depth of the filigree, the warmth of the gold and that vivid rubellite at its centre.

From First Idea to Final Detail

At Diosa del Alma, the person who imagines the jewel is also the person who makes it. Elizabeth designs and creates each piece herself, from the first idea to the moment it leaves her atelier.

This gives her the freedom to let a design evolve as she works. Proportions may shift or an unexpected detail may take the jewel in a new direction. Elizabeth enjoys leaving room for those moments rather than deciding everything in advance.

That same way of working makes personalisation a natural part of the atelier. Elizabeth can respond to individual wishes herself and shape a jewel with the person who will wear it in mind.

Elizabeth

Becoming a goldsmith was never part of the life she had imagined for herself. Until then, her career had been in the world of fashion and luxury. She had also built her own business, before serious illness unexpectedly changed the course of her life.

Several years later, during her recovery, she began learning to make jewellery. It was initially intended to support her rehabilitation, but she quickly became absorbed by the craft itself. She went on to train further as a goldsmith, discovering a direction she could never have imagined before her illness.
