Sapphirine is a rarity in the world of jewellery. Most crystals are not gem quality and specimens suitable for faceting are exceptionally rare. Named for its often sapphire-like colour, it is a mineral in its own right, and fine crystals with enough clarity to be faceted are exceptionally rare. The blue-green stones chosen for the Astraea Sapphirine Collier come from Madagascar, sourced through Mara Gems from small-scale artisanal mines. They are completely untreated and traceable back to where they were found.

Two strands of freshwater pearls lead towards the Astraea flowers, each made entirely by hand in filigree, while long strands of faceted chrysocolla fall below. From turquoise and blue to deeper greens, the natural variations in the stones bring the necklace to life with colour and movement. The flowers are built in two layers, with the upper section worked in alto relieve, a traditional three-dimensional filigree technique that raises the delicate wirework into sculptural relief. A faceted sapphirine sits at the heart of each flower, framed by warm gold and the intricate lines of the filigree.

Few gemstones are rare enough to remain unfamiliar even among those who know jewellery well. Sapphirine is one of them. Combined with filigree, a technique now practised by relatively few goldsmiths, it makes this necklace unusual in a way that has very little to do with fashion or trends. Its rarity lies in what it is, and in how it was made.

From First Idea to Final Detail

At Diosa del Alma, the person who imagines the jewel is also the person who makes it. Elizabeth designs and creates each piece herself, from the first idea to the moment it leaves her atelier.

This gives her the freedom to let a design evolve as she works. Proportions may shift or an unexpected detail may take the jewel in a new direction. Elizabeth enjoys leaving room for those moments rather than deciding everything in advance.

That same way of working makes personalisation a natural part of the atelier. Elizabeth can respond to individual wishes herself and shape a jewel with the person who will wear it in mind.

Elizabeth

Becoming a goldsmith was never part of the life she had imagined for herself. Until then, her career had been in the world of fashion and luxury. She had also built her own business, before serious illness unexpectedly changed the course of her life.

Several years later, during her recovery, she began learning to make jewellery. It was initially intended to support her rehabilitation, but she quickly became absorbed by the craft itself. She went on to train further as a goldsmith, discovering a direction she could never have imagined before her illness.
