Sapphirine is rarely seen in fine jewellery, and in faceted form it is rarer still. Most crystals simply do not have the quality needed to be cut as gemstones. Elizabeth chose a deep blue-green specimen from Madagascar for this ring, sourced through Mara Gems from small-scale artisanal mining. Completely untreated, the stone can be traced back to the mine where it was found.

Much of the work in the Astraea flower only reveals itself when you look closely. What first appears bold and almost sculptural is constructed from exceptionally fine filigree wire. Elizabeth builds the flower in two layers, shaping the eight upper petals by hand using alto relieve. This traditional three-dimensional technique lifts the wirework away from the surface, giving each petal its rounded form. Beneath them, a second, open layer of filigree allows glimpses of skin between the gold.

The sapphirine sits low at the centre, dark and intense against the warmth of the metal. Its blue-green colour has a depth that draws you in, but it is the change in scale that makes the ring so compelling. From across the hand, Astraea reads as a strong golden flower. Come closer and the solidity disappears into tiny lines of wire, individually shaped and joined by hand.

From First Idea to Final Detail

At Diosa del Alma, the person who imagines the jewel is also the person who makes it. Elizabeth designs and creates each piece herself, from the first idea to the moment it leaves her atelier.

This gives her the freedom to let a design evolve as she works. Proportions may shift or an unexpected detail may take the jewel in a new direction. Elizabeth enjoys leaving room for those moments rather than deciding everything in advance.

That same way of working makes personalisation a natural part of the atelier. Elizabeth can respond to individual wishes herself and shape a jewel with the person who will wear it in mind.

Elizabeth

Becoming a goldsmith was never part of the life she had imagined for herself. Until then, her career had been in the world of fashion and luxury. She had also built her own business, before serious illness unexpectedly changed the course of her life.

Several years later, during her recovery, she began learning to make jewellery. It was initially intended to support her rehabilitation, but she quickly became absorbed by the craft itself. She went on to train further as a goldsmith, discovering a direction she could never have imagined before her illness.
