Colour is what first draws you to Alquimia. Rhodolite, pink tourmaline, amethyst and blue sapphire circle the neck in flashes of berry, rose, violet and blue, their tiny facets catching the light as they move. Together, the gemstones create a sumptuous play of colour, made all the more striking by the simplicity of the gold flower at the centre.

Estella is drawn in filigree with long, open petals and a tiny tomatillo at her heart. This delicate sphere of wire belongs to a much wider filigree language, appearing in traditions as far apart as Mompox, the Dutch Zeeuwse knoop and Chinese filigree. I love finding these connections within such an ancient craft. Here, one of its smallest details sits quietly at the centre of a very contemporary composition of colour.

The name came from that meeting of seemingly different things. Alquimia means alchemy in Spanish, the centuries-old fascination with materials and their transformation when brought together. It seemed made for a necklace in which four very different gemstones find an unexpected harmony, gathered around a flower that carries traces of filigree traditions from different parts of the world.

From First Idea to Final Detail

At Diosa del Alma, the person who imagines the jewel is also the person who makes it. Elizabeth designs and creates each piece herself, from the first idea to the moment it leaves her atelier.

This gives her the freedom to let a design evolve as she works. Proportions may shift or an unexpected detail may take the jewel in a new direction. Elizabeth enjoys leaving room for those moments rather than deciding everything in advance.

That same way of working makes personalisation a natural part of the atelier. Elizabeth can respond to individual wishes herself and shape a jewel with the person who will wear it in mind.

Elizabeth

Becoming a goldsmith was never part of the life she had imagined for herself. Until then, her career had been in the world of fashion and luxury. She had also built her own business, before serious illness unexpectedly changed the course of her life.

Several years later, during her recovery, she began learning to make jewellery. It was initially intended to support her rehabilitation, but she quickly became absorbed by the craft itself. She went on to train further as a goldsmith, discovering a direction she could never have imagined before her illness.
