Margarita has a personal story behind her. She is named after someone very close to me, while her form takes its cue from the flower known by the same name in Spanish. There is another connection I only discovered much later: Margarita derives from the Greek margaritēs, meaning pearl. Somehow, the name had belonged in the world of jewellery all along.

Look closely and Margarita reveals how she is made. Two individually crafted filigree flowers come together to create her distinctive form. The upper flower is shaped in alto relieve, a technique I learned in Colombia that lifts the filigree away from the surface and gives it dimension. At the centre, a faceted peridot draws the eye into the intricate gold work around it.

I have always loved the freedom of a brooch. There is no prescribed way to wear it and no single place where it belongs. Margarita can sit on a lapel, fasten a scarf or become part of a dress. Each placement gives the flower a new presence, which is perhaps what makes a brooch such a wonderful jewel to make your own.

From First Idea to Final Detail

At Diosa del Alma, the person who imagines the jewel is also the person who makes it. Elizabeth designs and creates each piece herself, from the first idea to the moment it leaves her atelier.

This gives her the freedom to let a design evolve as she works. Proportions may shift or an unexpected detail may take the jewel in a new direction. Elizabeth enjoys leaving room for those moments rather than deciding everything in advance.

That same way of working makes personalisation a natural part of the atelier. Elizabeth can respond to individual wishes herself and shape a jewel with the person who will wear it in mind.

Elizabeth

Becoming a goldsmith was never part of the life she had imagined for herself. Until then, her career had been in the world of fashion and luxury. She had also built her own business, before serious illness unexpectedly changed the course of her life.

Several years later, during her recovery, she began learning to make jewellery. It was initially intended to support her rehabilitation, but she quickly became absorbed by the craft itself. She went on to train further as a goldsmith, discovering a direction she could never have imagined before her illness.
