Rosalia is a jewel for romantics. Richly layered, intricate and full of movement, she has something of the grandeur of historic fine jewellery, translated into filigree. There is gold, colour and detail everywhere, yet the closer you look, the finer it becomes.

I brought three Colombian filigree techniques together in this flower. Jalado creates the delicate patterns within the petals, ramales curl and branch through the open spaces, and alto relieve allows the flower to rise in sculptural layers. At its centre is a 3.5 mm rhodolite from Mara Gems, a tiny point of deep berry red held within all that fine gold work.

Rosalia found her name at my workbench. While forming the ramales, I kept seeing the slender stems and tendrils of a rose. Once the layers of petals began to come together, the whole flower took on this wonderfully romantic character. I loved the contrast: such fine, precise work creating something so rich and expressive. Rosalia felt as though it could never have been called anything else.

Then there is the Cascada. Blue sapphires, rhodolites and amethysts fall from beneath the flower in a long sweep of colour. Some are faceted and sparkle as they move; others are smooth, bringing depth and softness between the flashes of light. At the very end hangs a faceted pear shaped rhodolite. I love these colours together: sapphire blue, purple and deep berry red against warm gold. They give the earrings a richness that seems to shift with every movement.

The Cascada is detachable, leaving Rosalia to be worn as a filigree stud on her own. The gemstone drops can also be ordered separately and made with different stones on request. I find that transformation particularly beautiful. The same intricate flower can feel entirely different once colour and movement are added beneath it.

Rosalia holds so much of what I love about making jewellery. The drama is there from the moment you see her, but the real beauty reveals itself slowly: the tiny branches of filigree, the layers of the flower, the stones catching the light and all those hours of work hidden within the details. She is a jewel I could keep looking at.
